For too long, New Jersey’s education system was taken for granted, and its educators were underappreciated. Now, New Jersey has the nation’s number one public education system in the country, bolstered by large investments under Phil Murphy’s leadership. By expanding universal pre-K, making historic investments in schools, and launching tuition-free community college, Phil has worked over the last three-plus years to ensure that every child in New Jersey has access to the education they need for a lifetime of success.

During his first term, Phil has taken steps to invest in New Jersey’s students, uplift educators, and expand the way we think about education by:

Higher Education

Tackling the student debt crisis was at the forefront of Phil’s 2017 campaign, when he promised to make tuition-free community college a reality. In 2021, he signed legislation permanently establishing the Community College Opportunity Grant Program, which allows eligible students to attend any New Jersey community college without tuition or educational fees. His work has also led to the Garden State Guarantee which, if approved, will provide eligible low-income students with two years of free tuition at a public college or university in New Jersey. Together, these two plans provide a path for qualifying students to attend any public college in the state at no cost.
